He was predeceased by : his mother Janet. He is survived by : his wife Martha Cobb Kelly; his son Tristan Cobb (Kelly Malone); his grandson Oscar P. Cobb Malone; his father David A. Cobb (Mary Cobb); and his siblings, Emily Higgins (Chuck), John Cobb (Sara) and Timothy Cobb (Diane Barere). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Philip Burtt wrote a sympathy message

“I was 13 years old when Gene auditioned me to drum for his band Livewire. I had been playing only to songs on the radio… mostly funk and disco. And that’s what I played for Gene… which wasn’t at all what his band intended to play. So Gene said, “Well, that was pretty good, but how about you try this,” and he slipped in a tape of ZZ Top playing “Waitin’ for the Bus”. I had no idea what the drummer was doing. So I faked it. Gene knew I faked it. He gave me the job anyway. And changed my life.”
