He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Arthur Cummings and Doris Cummings (Fitch); his wife Jane Ann Hayward; his children, Donald A. Cummings (Eriko) of Melrose, Dr. Robert S. Cummings Jr. (Janna) of Hood River, Oregon, Judith L. Cummings of Woburn and Dr. Elizabeth C. Shurland (Abraham T. Shurland) of Reading; and his grandchildren, Raisa, Suha, Robert III, Janine, Adelaide, David, Glynnis, Rachel and Joseph.
