Timothy J. Evans Obituary

Rockport- Timothy Joseph Evans, loving husband, father, brother, friend, died last week, surrounded by family, who filled his room with music, giving wings to his final journey. He was 80.

Born in Queens, Tim grew up in Freeport, New York, attending Holy Redeemer School and Freeport High School. Tim earned three degrees in English literature: a BA from St. Lawrence University, a Master's from the University of Virginia, and a PhD from Boston University. He moved to Rockport with his wife Laura in 1980.

Tim published short stories, poems, and reviews. A lifelong teacher, he loved conversing about books, movies, music, and art, whether in classrooms at B.U., Curry College, Salem State, or around the kitchen table. He held academic arguments with friends until his final days. His artistic interests extended from painting to boxing, from fly fishing to film.

A music aficionado, Tim collected thousands of records, often listening into the wee hours. A phenomenal memory enabled him to recite soloists and session men, composers and lyricists, and to intone riffs and solos at will. But Tim took greatest joy in the musical accomplishments of his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Tim's commitment to American justice started early and ran deep. At age 16, he was appointed March Captain in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. During the 1970s, as a Conscientious Objector to the Vietnam War, he performed alternative civilian service at Shattuck Hospital and the National Cancer Society.

Mostly, Tim treasured his family. Come spring, he'd pop flies and play catch with the kids. He attended their Little League games, recitals, and plays. With his movie camera and pen, Tim captured the poetry of life.

Tim leaves behind his wife Laura, his children Diana Evans, Brendan Evans, Marina Evans (Bernardo Baglioni), and Francis Evans (Sophia Lambropoulos); his grandchildren Scarlett Berge, Ella Baglioni, and Aristotle Timothy Evans; his brother Matthew Evans (Martha), his sister Margaret Stamm (Rick), nephews Brian Stamm, Terry Stamm and Joshua Evans, and his many dear friends and colleagues. We treasure his memory and will be guided by his example.

A Mass will be celebrated at St. Joachim Church in Rockport, Massachusetts, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 12PM, followed by a gathering to celebrate his life.
