He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Fitzgerald and Helen G. Fitzgerald (Ford); his sisters, Helen Harrington, Mary Cinotta, Rita Lott, Geraldine Robertson, Elaine Bennett and Teresa Deveraux; and his siblings-in-law, Claire Howard (late Paul) and Janet Livingston (late William).

He is survived by: his wife Marilyn R. Fitzgerald (Fitzpatrick); his children, Donna J. Vallesio (Joseph) of Medford, Michael J. Fitzgerald (Frances Lund) of Somerville, Stephen Fitzgerald (MaryEllen Hamilton) of Tewksbury and James Fitzgerald (Laurie) of Malden; his grandchildren, Jeremy Vallesio of Medford, Anthony Vallesio of Tewksbury, Christopher Fitzgerald of Malden, Caroline Fitzgerald of Malden, Brittni Wilkins and Ashley Mullowney; and his siblings, Doris Malone of Tarpon Sprins, FL, Jean Deveraux of Revere and Nancy Mitchell of Malden. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
