He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold Crate and Myrtle Crate; and his sisters, Jean, Barbara and Beverly.

He is survived by: his children, Michael Crate (Wendy) of Punta Gorda, FL. and Kelly Gourde of Westfield; his grandchildren, John Gourde Jr., Cameron Gourde, Sophia Crate and Ethan Crate; and his sisters, Geraldine and Jacqueline. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
