He is survived by: his caregiver Maria Georgiopoulos Mackavey Carls; his children, Peter Carls of Westboro, MA, Elizabeth Carls (Louis Brueggeman) of Bethesda, MD and Susan Churchill (Tom) of Boulder, CO; his stepchildren, Christopher Phoenix Dolezal of New York, NY and Jill Mackavey (Rick Tagliaferri) of Ashland, MA.; his grandchildren, Jonathan Carls, Aloha, Timothy, Rose Churchill, Ursula and William Brueggeman; his stepgrandchildren, Noah Tagliaferri (Kate), Amalia and Kai Phoenix Dolezal; his brother Richard Carls (Emma Harrison) of Wellesley, MA; his nieces, Alexa Hogarty and Olivia Steidle; and his nephew Nicholas Carls.
