He was predeceased by : his wife Marie L.; his daughter Ann Marie Burns; his parents, John H. Burns and Margaret Burns (Murphy); and his brother John Burns.

He is survived by : his sons, Robert F. Burns Jr. (Corinne) of Chelmsford and David Burns (Kathleen) of Northborough; his grandchildren, Alison, Ryan (Kathryn), Kaleigh (Junki Ogawa) and Gregory; his great grandchildren, Ellie, Jack and Henry; his grandson Sean (Shannon Connelly); and his siblings, Dorothy Burns, Theresa Lennon, Mary Burns, Alice Lynch, Paul Burns, Edward Burns and Arthur Burns. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
