He was predeceased by: his parents, Ezra South and Minnie South; his former wife Jean South; his siblings, Rose Marie Hanks, Jeanette Strange and Jessie South; and his stepgranddaughter Catherine Warner.
He is survived by: his wife Jeanne Shawhan; his children, Joseph South of Bel Air and Katherine South of York, PA; his stepchildren, Jeanne Nichols of Sykesville, MD, Jackie Warner of Westminster, MD, John Shawhan of Knoxville, TN and David Shawhan of Annapolis, MD; and his brother Ronny South of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
