He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Doug Mitchell and Doris Mitchell; his wife Laurie Jane Mitchell; his children, Stephen Mitchell, Jr., Samantha Mitchell and Ryan Mitchell; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Bauer, Sasha, Ronin, Sagan and Marion; and his sister Sue Hickman. He was also cherished by his nieces and nephews.

The family has suggested that memorial donations could be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Maryland SPCA.
