He was predeceased by: his parents, Cooper Jefferson Rivers and Annie Laura Rivers; and his siblings, Viola R. Young, Archie L. "Tony" Rivers and Gary C. Rivers.
He is survived by: his wife Annie J. McLean; his children, Warnest C. Rivers, James R. Rivers, Jr., Wendell Rivers (Cindy), Laura Rivers Grant (Donald) and Andre Rivers (Lakita); his siblings, Raymond J. Rivers of Petersburg, Virginia and Annie Rivers Dailey of Petersburg, Virginia; his aunt Anna Rivers Ridley; his siblings-in-law, Pearl Dale, Ida Dow, Brenda Hicks and Hubert McLean, Jr.; his cousin Josephine Richardson; his close friends, Cliff Maynor, Ed White and James Kurtis; and his friend Howard Blackwell. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
