He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter H. Ettinger, Sr. and Norma Jeanne Ettinger. He is survived by: his wife Susan Wright Ettinger; his children, Elizabeth Walter Maybach (Beth), Justin Lyon Ettinger and Alexander Wright Ettinger (Alex); his children-in-law, Robert Maybach (Rob) and Caroline Watson; his grandchildren, Genevieve Maybach, Emma Maybach and Kye Hartley Ettinger; his sister Penelope Ettinger (Penny); his brother-in-law Kris Bauman; and his nieces, Elizabeth and Susanna Bauman.
