He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Alfred Spellman and Launia Spellman; his sisters, May Frances Guy and Vivian E. Blaize; his nephew Donald Bruce Walton; his sons, Daryl Paul Spellman of Durham, Brian K. Thomas of Trenton, Charles Christopher Forte of Charlotte, Christopher Ellis Jones of Emmaus and Ramon Elliot Jones of Brandywine, Maryland; and his cousin Rena Moaning. He was also cherished by nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and friends.

While there, he was selected for a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship to study political communication at the University of North Carolina (UNC), School of Journalism at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
