He was predeceased by: his parents, Leroy Herbert "Murph" and Laura May Gears Dowling; his grandparents, Herbert Leroy, Ethel Dowling, Perry and Laura Crofoot Gears; and his sister Constance Slade.

He is survived by: his wife Kathy Dowling; his children, Walker Dowling of Chestertown, MD and Kate Dowling Stone of Worton, MD; his sisters, Laura Riordan and Elizabeth Dowling; his grandchildren, Gabriel Cypress Stone of Worton, MD, Finneous Markham Stone of Worton, MD and Robert Caleb Stone of Worton, MD; and his nieces and nephews, Kelly Anthony, Matthew Anthony, Kristan Slade and Lynden Slade.
