He was predeceased by: his parents, Louis Knippenberg and Mary Knippenberg (McKee); his sister Helene Schilling; and his daughter-in-law Sharlene Knippenberg. He is survived by: his wife Lois Knippenberg (Ashenfelter); his children, Kim Rotruck (Neil), Mark Knippenberg and Suzanne Hartman (Chris); his grandchildren, Jennifer Wensink (Tom), Stephen Rotruck, Chad Knippenberg (Katie), Drew Knippenberg (Jess Harding), Jackie Sagal (Jeff), Haley Handera (Chris) and Zach Stewart; his sister-in-law Jan Jackson; his niece Sherri Jackson; his nephew Mark Jackson (Cindi); his close friends, Lonnie Jackson and Mary Rice; Taylor and Larry. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren.
