He was predeceased by : his parents, William Harmel and Elizabeth Harmel; his former life partner Shirley Harmel; his brother Gustave Harmel; his grandson Mark Harmel; and his stepson Russell Thumann.
He is survived by : his wife Darla Harmel; his sons, Melvin Harmel, Jr. and Stephen "Steve" Harmel, Sr. (Barbara); his stepson Brad Thumann (Angie); and his grandchildren, Joey Harmel, Laurie Ann Harmel-Schunder (John), Janet Harmel Bradley (Mark), Amy Harmel Pomeroy (Jess), Stephen Harmel, Jr. (Kristina) and Garrett Harmel. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren.
