Alice Abbott Obituary

Alice Abbott, 84, of Deal Island, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2025 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home.

Born in Norfolk, VA on May 15, 1940, she was a daughter of the late Arthur James and Alma Miller. Her husband of 59 years, Harry Melvin "Sonny" Abbott, preceded her in death on July 20, 2017.

For 26 years she was a school bus driver for Deal Island Elementary School and also worked as an Aid there. She truly loved her work. In addition, she helped her late husband with his seafood business.

Active in her community, Mrs. Abbott was a member of St. Johns Church and served over 50 years with the Deal Island Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She cooked and served many dinners for funerals, fire department events, and community events.

She is survived by three children, Michael Abbott (Pam) of Mt. Vernon, Carol Abbott Webster of Chance, and Alan Abbott (Cindy) of Chance; a sister, Betty Tyrell of Delmar; four grandchildren, Liza Abbott (Jamie) of Pocomoke, Christopher Lokey (Christina) of Elkridge, Megan Merrill of Eden, and Cameron Abbott (Elijah) of Princess Anne; two great-grandchildren, Baylee Cowger and Oliver Lee Lokey; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service officiated by Pastor Dave Webster will be held Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 12 PM at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron, MD.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Johns Church or Deal Island Fire Department.
