He was predeceased by : his parents, Dudley Ayers and Irma Ayers. He is survived by : his wife Barbara; his children, Susan Ayers of Bath, ME and Andrew Ayers (Julie) of Waterville, ME; his stepchildren, Michael Diseati and Jennifer Kashurba (Kevin); and his grandchildren, Conrad Ayers, Emme Ayers, Ehren Kashurba, Matilda Kashurba and William "Frantz" Rodenhauser.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don's honor to Christ Church, Easton, MD or Easton Volunteer Fire Department, Easton, MD.
