He was predeceased by: his parents, James Alfred Wallace, Sr. and Serena Minor Wallace; his grandson Austin Chandler; his niece Laura Hobbs; and his goddaughter Rae Dutton Howard.

He is survived by: his children, Dr. Melvia Wallace, Dr. Monica Wallace, Serena Wallace and Shelby Wallace; his wife Linda Mott Wallace; his siblings, Celina Hobbs and James A. Wallace, Jr.; his grandchildren, Brandi Rice-Wallace, Douglas Hayes, Isaiah Wallace, Ariana Wallace and Christian Hayes; his nieces and nephews, Darlene Hobbs, Sharon Hunter, Constance Wallace, Clifford Hobbs, Wallace Hobbs and Darren Wallace; and his godchildren, Eran Green, LeVon Dock and Jasmine Caldwell Fallie. He is also survived by other relatives and lifelong friends.

He and his brother, James Alfred Wallace, Jr, took an exam offered through a scholarship sponsored by the Ford Foundation for students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades.
