He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Bates and Margaret Bates; his brother Henry Wilbur Bates Jr. (Amanda); and his siblings-in-law, Theodore Dyson and Sharon Dyson.
He is survived by: his son Ralph Bernard Bates; his wife Vera "Shorty" Bates; his children, Anthony, Timothy Bates, Alicia and Bridget Bates; his stepdaughters, Verna Jones, Phyllis Wright and Leticia Fitzhugh; and his son-in-law Brian Fitzhugh. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
