He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold R. Johnson and Irma E. Johnson-McGalliaria; his brother Harold Johnson; his stepfather Peter T. McGalliaria; and his aunts and uncles, Carol J. Hayes, Hope Warren, Geraldine Johnson, Phyllis Graves, Lois Stockton, Katherine Harewood, Georgette "Betty" Johnson, Bertha Johnson, Richard, Edward, Louie, Charles, Leroy, Winslow and Robert Johnson.
He is survived by: his wife Adele Sadler Johnson; his children, Merritt L. Johnson II and Stephanie Johnson Moore; his son-in-law Virgil Moore III; his granddaughters, Madison, Morgan and Zarina Moore; and his stepbrother Peter McGalliaria. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
