With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Leila Genet Shawel of Laurel, Maryland, who passed away on April 8, 2024 at the age of 17. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

She is survived by : her parents, Bethel Necho Asres and Getnet Estifanos Shawel.

Visitation was held on Saturday, April 13th 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Donaldson Funeral Home (313 Talbott Ave, Laurel, MD 20707). A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 13th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the same location.

Leila had worked very hard towards achieving her goal of making a meaningful contribution towards combating global peace crises and socioeconomic disparities.

“In loving memory of Leila Genet Shawel, Though I did not know Leila very well, as we were just in the same Biology class, I wish I got to know her better. I remember sitting in a UPenn interest meeting with her and thinking to myself "wow... she's definitely getting into UPenn." A part of me wonders why I can keep going on this journey and she can't.
