He was predeceased by: his parents, William Andrew and Rose Spence; and his brothers, William, Otis and George Spence.

He is survived by: his wife Anne Spence; his children, James Spence Jr., David Spence Sr., Sylvia Terry, Vicki Grimes and Tammy Espinet; his son-in-law Christian Espinet; and his siblings, Elaine Bea, Annie Mae Brown, Eva Butler, Henderson Spence and Ernest Spence.
