He was predeceased by: his parents, William Simms and Ruth Simms; his wife June Simms; his sons, Robert Simms and Michael Simms; and his siblings, Harry, Dorothy and Lil.

He is survived by: his children, James Simms, Jr. (Jennifer) of Delaware, Judith Thayer of Virginia and John Simms of Florida; and his daughter-in-law Tina Simms of Maryland. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
