He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernise Smith and Marian Smith; and his siblings, Teresa Smith, Mary Ames and Stephen Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Charlene Smith; his children, Meaghan Smith of Myersville, MD, Tatiana Burrier (Seth) of Thurmont, MD and Bernard J. Smith II (Erica) of Emmitsburg, MD; his grandchildren, Madelyn, Ella, Simon, Marissa, Sawyer and Mara; and his sisters, Carol Smith of Frederica, DE and Susan Perry (Jim) of Stuarts Draft, VA. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charitable Service Trust or the American Diabetes Association.
