He was predeceased by : his parents, Magdalene "Maggie" Hughes (Burkhart) and William Albert Hughes; his wife Effie Mae Hughes; his stepson David Hutzell; and his brother Randall Hughes.

He is survived by : his sons, George Cobey William Hughes (Vidal) and Steven Hughes (Candy); his stepchildren, Jim James Lewis, Sharon Snyder (Gary), Linda Sullivan (Skip), Chuck Hutzell (Debbie) and Rhonda Hutzell; his sister Mary Lantz (Bob); and his sister-in-law Betty Shaffer. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren.
