He was predeceased by: his parents, Erich Hilse and Mabel E. Hilse (Matthews); his spouse Katharyn Patricia "Patty" Hilse; and his siblings, Russell and Wiliam Hilse.

He is survived by: his children, Vernon Hilse Jr. (Donna), Cynthia Hilse, Jeffery A. Hilse (Allison) and Jennifer Blevins (Wade). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.

“Brownie was the first neighbor that I spoke with when we moved to Parkton in 1982. He was immediately open and made me feel welcomed. I recall him and his son clearing the snow drifts at 2 am when Pretty Boy was impassible. A hard working, honest, friendly guy. There are not many like him left. I will miss him. Neal and Sharon Carmody”
