He is survived by: his wife Dr. Sheryl Sato; his children, Julia Hanover and Jeremy Hanover (Priscilla Quaye); and his brother David Hanover.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 4th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Congregation (9601 Cedar Ln, Bethesda, MD 20814).
He earned his B.S. from the University of Tulsa in 1976 and went on to earn his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1981, where he trained with Dr. William J Lennarz, pursued postdoctoral work with Dr. Ira Pastan as a Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund Fellow and went on to build a scientific career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) defined by scientific innovation, mentorship, and service.
