He was predeceased by : his parents, John Messick and Hattie Nelson Messick; his girlfriend Frances Paul; and his siblings, Jerry Messick, Ethel Travers, Beatrice Harris, William Messick, John Riley Messick, Jeanie Coggin and Jackie Kidd.

He is survived by : his niece Barbara Klempner; and his sister Hattie "Cookie" Newby.
