He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence B. Matthews and Eva Mae Nelson Matthews; his brothers, Alan "Al" Matthews, Clarence "Chick" B. Matthews, Jr., Louis "Lou" N. Matthews and William "Bill" T. Matthews; his brother-in-law Douglas "Doug" Mahnkey; and his close friends, Art Little, Ronnie Fisher and Bill Bunce.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Walston Matthews; his sons, John "Kevin" Matthews and Thomas "Tom" Lee Cherrix, Jr.; his grandchildren, Jessica Ashley Cherrix Messick (Chad) and Thomas "Tommy" Lee Cherrix, III (Emily); his great grandchild Myles E. Messick; his sister Carolyn "Sis" M. Mahnkey; his siblings-in-law, Jean Matthews, Eleanor Matthews, Ann Matthews, Barbara "Bobbi" E. Walston and Murray Eugene "Gene" Walston (Kay); and his nieces and nephews, Mike Matthews (Margaret), Jeff Matthews (Amanda), Brian Matthews (Stacey), Steve Matthews (Stacey), Denise Phillips, Lisa Jay (Chris), David Matthews (Leila) and Jeff Walston (Michelle).
