He was predeceased by: his parents, John Matthews and Ethel Matthews; his wife Lea Risley; his pet Tessa; and his brothers, John Matthews, Jr., Arthur Matthews and Michael Matthews, Sr..
He is survived by: his son Jeffrey Paul (Cindy) of Pocomoke, MD.; his adoptive daughter Judie Abbott (Jerry) of Georgetown, DE.; his son Richard Phillip (Jami) of Salisbury, MD; his grandchildren, Brittany Matthews and Phillip Matthews; his sister Doris; his siblings' child Dale; his sister Ellen Wilson (Tom) of Emmaus, PA.; his son George Linvill of Temperanceville, VA.; and his pets, Clara and Jillie. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
