He is survived by: his wife Jamie Downs McLaughlin; his children, David Scott McLaughlin (Natalie Franceschi), Caitlin Suzanne McLaughlin (Tim Watkins), Alysoun Niamh McLaughlin (Frank Mancino) and Stirling James Downs McLaughlin (Dawn Ravine); his grandchildren, Lydia Watkins, Benjamin Watkins, Catherine Blumhagen, Alaric Blumhagen and Teji McLaughlin; and his brother Bill McLaughlin (Anna).

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Philadelphia Folksong Society or the NIH Children's Inn, or be used to support a young musician, writer, or artist.
