He was predeceased by: his son John Matthew Essex; and his parents, Bernard Essex and Alice Essex. He is survived by: his wife Cathy; and his daughter Sara Essex Merritt. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; cousins; nieces and nephews.
