He was predeceased by: his parents, John G. Burns and Mary Burns (Farrell); his daughter Chrisanne Burns; and his brothers, John "Tardy" Burns, Michael Burns and Timothy Burns.

He is survived by: his wife Carolyn W. Burns (Wiley) of Augusta; his sons, John Gregory Burns (Carrie) and Patrick Burns (Megan); and his grandchildren, Jared, Luke, Jackson, Shane, Drew, Makayla and Jack. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
