She was predeceased by: her parents, Philip Gilbert and Evelyn Gilbert; her husband William Downar; her siblings, Louise Lee and Tom Gilbert; and her stepdaughter Cissy Downar.
She is survived by: her children, Paul Smith (ChunHwa) of Virginia and Kim Ellms (Chuck) of Dexter; her sister Debbie Gilbert Chute of Kansas; and her great grandchildren, Jameson, Isaac and Vivienne. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan's memory to the Dexter Historical Society or the Sunshine Club of Dexter.
