He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Leighton and Dorothy Leighton (Nightingale); his sister Laurie Doescher; and his brother-in-law Jay Doescher. He is survived by: his wife Laurie Leighton; his children, Sarah Carr of Edinburg and Matt Leighton of Houlton; his grandchildren, Zachary Carr (Abigail) of Milo, Wyatt Carr of Passadumkeag, Gabby Chasse (Jonathan) of Howland, Brianna Carr (Jerry) of Passadumkeag and Brady Carr of Edinburg; and his nephew Ryan Doescher (Sara) of Indianapolis. He is also survived by several nieces nephews, sisters and brother in laws, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and many friends.
