He was predeceased by: his parents, Thurlow Knowles and Hilma Knowles (Smith); his former wife Lois Nowell Knowles; his brother Ralph; and his sister-in-law Kathy Knowles.
He is survived by: his wife Rose "Penny" Knowles of Kennebunk; his children, Denise Butler (Norman) of Kennebunk, Stephen Knowles (Michelle) of Casco, Todd Berry (Wendy) of Buxton and Jaime Stevens (Rich) of Hollis; his grandchildren, Anwen Heister (Bryen), Case Butler (Natasha), Raelyn Knowles, Maddy Stevens and TJ Berry; and his siblings, Larry Knowles of Texas and Elaine Knowles (Donnie) of Brewer. He is also survived by extended family members and friends.
Visitation was held on Friday, August 28th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Black-Heald & Walker Funeral Home (580 Main St, Springvale, ME 04083). A funeral service was held on Saturday, August 29th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the North Parish Congregational Church (895 Main St, Sanford, ME 04073).
He served as president of the Maine Water Utilities Association and was honored with the Jeff Nixon Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his contributions to the field.
