He was predeceased by: his former wife Peggy Handlin; his parents, Ed and Molly; and his sister Patricia (Stuart Lawlor). He is survived by: his wife Marlene Kane; his children, Mary Kay (Joe Ramos), Patty (Dan Serrano), Meg Handlin (Christopher Jasonides) and Ed Handlin III (Jodee Santry); and his sister-in-law Mary Randall. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ed's name to the Saco Food Pantry, PO Box 246, Saco, ME.
