He was predeceased by: his parents, John C. Townsend "Big John" and Sandra J. Townsend (Knight); and his pet Jenny. He is survived by: his wife Yuzhi Sun "CoCo"; his stepdaughter Nicole; his daughter Tabitha Emery (Shawn Emery); his grandson Gavin Emery; and his sister Tammy Linscott (Jeff Linscott). He is also survived by siblings, cousins, nieces and a nephew.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations to be made to the Gosnall House in Scarborough where John and his family received exceptional care during his extended stay.
