He was predeceased by: his father Terry Smit; his son Dillon Orvis; his brother Paul Smit; his in-laws, Richard and Nancy Black; and his brother-in-law Roger Black.

He is survived by: his mother Jeanne Smit (Durian); his wife Lisa Black; his children, Mckenna Black, Ethan Black, Aurora Black, Ericka Black and Liam Black; his sisters, Becky Vanderpol (Stan) and Emily Martin (Kevin); and his siblings-in-law, Amy Smit, Laura Grate (Kevin) and Richard Black (Amy). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
