He was predeceased by: his parents, Ashley LaPaugh and Effie LaPaugh (Boyer); his spouse Shirley Kaye Merlington; his grandson RJ LaPaugh; his son-in-law Jeff Cook; and his siblings, Ralph LaPaugh, Robert LaPaugh, Harold LaPaugh and Jean Schaeffer.

He is survived by: his children, Linda Cook (Tom), James LaPaugh and Rodney LaPaugh (Patricia); his grandchildren, Lauren (Josh), Paul (Joey), Kyle (Becca), Chandler (Amber), Hannah, Bailey (Cory), Cooper, Jessica (Eric) and Chelsey (Glenn); his sister Kathleen Cole; and his brothers-in-law, Kendal Deatsman and Roy Merlington. He is also survived by 16 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hero Center in St. Louis.
