He was predeceased by: his parents, William Zimmerman and Isabel Zimmerman (Ryan). He is survived by: his family Quaker; his granddaughter Kelsey; his pets, Smokey and Hecate; his wife Susan McClanahan; his sister Susan Parnell; his nieces and nephews, Shannon and Terri; his children, Fred Zimmerman (Cheryl), Carl Zimmerman (Minakshi) and Alice Zimmerman (Marvin); his stepdaughter Rachel Thompson (John Rietz); and his grandchildren, Parker, Dhruv, Vidur, Dante, Phoenix Zimmerman, Claudia and Sam Rietz.
In retirement, Bill continued his research as actively as he ever had, going into the Center for Political Studies every workday until, at 83, the Covid pandemic sent him home.
