He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Matthes and Maria Matthes (Hille). He is survived by: his wife Lois (Retreat); his children, David Matthes, Lori Appold (Daryl), Susan Lewis (Michael) and Daniel Matthes (Shannon); his grandchildren, Matthew Appold (Samantha Scola), Alexandria Appold (Joseph Foret), Emily EauClaire, Trevor Matthes and Donovan Matthes; and his brother-in-law Ryan Nagy (Pat).
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Friday, July 25th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 25th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Frankenlust (6094 Westside Saginaw Rd, Bay City, MI 48706). A burial will be held on Friday, July 25th 2025 at the St. Paul Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Herb's name to the St. Paul Ministry Center or the Toni and Trish House.
