He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Engel and Amelia Engel (Falk); and his son Christopher Allen Engel. He is survived by: his wife Darlene; his sons, Richard Gordon Engel II (Denise), Edward David Engel (Kelly Allegree) and Andrew Jon Engel (Jennifer G. Marquis); his grandchildren, Brandee Metropulos, Tye Lovett, Alex, Riley Engel, Nora and Lena Schultz; and his siblings, Helen Metzger, Herbert D. Engel, Esther Engel, Edna Golladay and Janette Engel.
