She was predeceased by: her parents, Patricia Ann Schmitt (Healy) and James F. Schmitt. She is survived by: her husband Richard "Rico" Smith of Birmingham; her sons, Benjamin Smith of Bloomfield Hills and Phillip Smith of Bloomfield Hills; her grandson Ethan Henry; and her siblings, Kathleen Rheaume of Chesterfield, Andrew Schmitt (Myania Moses) of Arlington Virginia, Mark Schmitt (Fran) of Wellington, Anna Schmitt-Reichert (Don) of Pittsfield, Marilyn Twiehaus (John) of Carmel, Susan Schmitt-Creech (Michael) of Ann Arbor, Daniel Schmitt of Milwaukie and Douglas Schmitt of Denver, Colorado..

In 2003, she became the 9th recipient of the national Theresa Foundation Award, in recognition of her community service for people with disabilities.
