He was predeceased by: his parents, Max Penwell and Margaret Penwell (Bromley); and his brother Larry Penwell. He is survived by: his wife Mary Anne Penwell; his daughters, Karmin Walker (Dan Maier) and Lisa Johnson (Eric); and his grandchildren, Chelsey Walker (Nicholas), Megan Helms (John Paul), Colin Johnson (Katie) and Madison Dykes (Logan). He is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
