He was predeceased by: his parents, Helen Irene Slatton (Cochenour) and Fred Slatton; and his siblings, Fred II, Robert, Marvin Slatton and Margaret Hendricks.

He is survived by: his wife Diane; his children, Brian Bates (Angela) of Flushing, Kendrick Bates (Elizabeth) of Swartz Creek, Aaron Bates (Lyndsay) of Arizona and Stephanie Slatton (Mitch Nowacki) of Grand Blanc; and his siblings, Thomas Slatton (Joan) of Carleton, Carroll Chipurdy (James) of Carleton and Jerry Slatton of Florida. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
