He was predeceased by: his parents, John James "Jim" and Mabel Hempton (Libert); and his siblings, Betty Ellicott, Roberta Hempton and Charles Hempton.

He is survived by: his wife Dianne LaPeer; his children, Deanna Hempton (Terry), Wendy Hempton and Jim Hempton (Christin); and his grandchildren, Marissa Summersett (Ryan), Chris Summersett (Kelly), Lauryn Hempton and Charlie Hempton.

“So sorry of Walt' passing, had not been back to Cass City in years. Best Athletic that I had the privilege to play with for 3 years and to ever see in my coaching career. Wally could do everything. Alot of people didn't know this but I got out of college and Wally the armed forces we would go up to the Lakers and play against the old Lakers! Ed Wolfer (Lakers coach always welcomed our group) In the fall after football practice we would go hunting along the Cass River near the farm. Ed Rethe”
