He was predeceased by: his parents, John Simpson, and Theolia Simpson, Sr.; his wife Patricia Ann Brooks; his daughters, Cheryl Ann and Barbara Osborne; his grandchildren, Daniel Steele, Myrna Roberts and Ray Osborne; and his sisters, JoAnne Bass and Theola Jane Scott.

He is survived by: his children, Deborah Steele (Brent), Donna Adams (Charles), Jacqueline Thompson (Melvin) and John Simpson II (Tracey); his grandchildren, Mya Steele, Marcus Allen, Chelley Smith, Nathaniel Smith II, Lauren Brann, John "Snapper" Simpson, Cheryl Schoff, Felicia Williams and Cherae Broussard; and his sister Mary Jacqueline Haines. He is also survived by twenty-one great grandchildren.
