He was predeceased by: his parents, Clinton Thornton and Arlene Thornton (Erickson). He is survived by: his wife Lou; his daughters, Tracy Lepp (Adam) and Theresa Layman (Tad); his pet Lucky; his siblings, Brenda Horn (Aldon), Joyce Brown (Henry), Jayne Anderson (Brad) and Jason Thornton (Michelle); and his sister-in-law Maryann Allen (Bob).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Cheboygan County Humane Society in his name, honoring his love for animals.
