He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Balkema and Josephine Balkema (VanDyk); his grandson Nathan Balkema; and his siblings, David Balkema and Joanne Vlietstra.
He is survived by: his children, Donald Balkema (Laurel), Linda Klomparens, Mark Balkema (Kimberlie), Brian Balkema (Audrey) and Steven Balkema (Nicole); his grandchildren, Michael Balkema, Joshua Balkema (Kelsey), Nicole Balkema, Melissa Tomilo (Evan), Zachary Klomparens (Lauren), Casandra DeRushia (Gary), Kylie Boer (Chris), Rachel, Jacob, Bethany, Seth, Isaac Balkema, Andrew, Natalie, Josie Balkema, Emma, Corbin and Harper Balkema; his great grandchildren, Colton, Hailey Balkema, Madison Tomilo, Rueben, Elise, Drew Klomparens, Olivia, Isaac, Theo DeRushia and Hugh Boer; his sisters, Mary Vlietstra (Marvin) and Esther Uramkin (John); and his siblings-in-law, Nellie Balkema and Clarence Vlietstra. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
